contribution tallies

Speaking for myself, I know my contribution #s (across all the wikis I've joined, not just here) are artificially inflated because I've learned to "save early, save often" to avoid losing content when I screw something up. Especially when I'm working in tables, I save my work repeatedly, with the consequence of having what is really one contribution being counted maybe six or seven times.

That's just a flaw inherent to the system, so like all numeric stats, you have to take it with a grain of salt. Fortunately, on wikis and other true community sites, the numbers aren't what's really important -- the community at large comes to know which members are making substantial, quality contributions.

This is why the Top Contributors cloud takes both total contribs and recent contribs into account -- you can "blitz" your way in with post-spreeing, but you'll have to keep at it if you want to hold your spot. It's also why on a member's profile page you can see their contribs broken down by page edits and by threads.

It's almost impossible to tell whether someone is actually post-spreeing, or if they're just overcautious savers (on page edits, like me) or just chatty (in discussion threads). The bottom line really is, what are they really CONTRIBUTING to the site? Is it positive and constructive?

I still "believe" in the Top Contributors cloud -- a few rogues may come and go, but over time, on most sites the faces you see there are in fact the site's most engaged and active members.

Yeah, look on this site. JL, BrandonE, me, Green-Arrow, Almaxr, Reaper_Z, and MadBillyBlack are in the top contributor cloud. See! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Yea, I save often too. I get really paranoid about losing my internet connection (which is wireless and sometimes dodgy) while uploading pictures. Also, I tend to do lots of format changes because I get kinda fussy about the layout. At the moment I'm reformatting nearly all my galleries to fit with wetpaint's new look, but I'm not deliberately trying to raise my status!

I side both with Green Arrow and Jeremy on this.

As Green Arrow put it, I "Save Early Save Often" because I'm usually worried my connection is going to randomly sputter out on me, as well as having occasional load problems with my pictures. Not to mention, spacing issues here and there.

I also whole heartedly agree with Jeremy's saying that those who truly contribute have that to be proud of.

I, myself, am proud of the individual galleries I've posted, and couldn't care one way or another about how many times I had to save during their construction. I look forward to posting more and better pics on this site in the future and seeing what proud contributions you all have to offer as well.

""Post Spreeing"" Yikes! Do people really fool with this? Too funny, I often wondered why people commented and added with the same thing over and over, I thought maybe "just a bit lazy" lol, wanted to comment, but didn't want to type. :) Makes sense though, but surely they could find some coolness to say about your site! This BrickiWiki Rocks, kudos to the Paintcan Award! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?
